With age, missing teeth in adults becomes a more prominent issue. The loss of teeth to periodontal disease, decay or injury requires a solution. The options for replacing missing teeth in adults are bridges, dentures or the increasingly more popular dental implants.
To replace a single tooth, the most effective and natural looking option is a dental implant. A dental implant is surgically placed into the jawbone where it fuses with the bone. This method of tooth replacement mimics the root system of your natural teeth, creating a long lasting replacement. There is no additional maintenance required and it looks like your natural tooth.
A bridge is another viable option for replacing a single tooth. There are three parts to a bridge: a middle unit spanning the length of the missing tooth and two end units that are placed on either side of the middle. The surrounding teeth are ground down to be used for supporting the bridge. The pieces are put into place, then bonded to your natural teeth for stability. A dental bridge is a permanent solution, but will most likely require maintenance through a lifetime.
A partial denture is also an option to replace a single missing tooth. The removable denture is an artificial tooth, attached to a plastic base and held in place by metal clasps. A partial denture is the least popular option because it is not permanent, and looks less natural than either a bridge or a dental implant.
For instances where there are multiple missing teeth in adults, the options are similar. Single dental implants can be placed in the spaces of the missing teeth. A dental bridge is also an option using the same method as described above, except using a longer bridge or in some cases using strategically placed dental implants to support the bridge. Dentures are always an option, for single, multiple or full mouth teeth replacement.
